The installation of lighting products in bathrooms is governed by strict IEE wiring regulations. The following paragraphs give an overview of these regulations in order to help you select an appropriate product for your bathroom. For more detailed information on these regulations you may wish to visit www.iee.org.uk.
Your bathroom is divided into 4 zones which surround the area around and over the bath, shower and sink basin. Each zone requires a product installed in it to have what is known as an IP rating.
What is IP?
IP stands for Ingression Protection and is always followed by two digits (for example IP44). The first digit refers to a products ability to withstand solid particle ingression such as dust. A product with an IP rating will always carry a number for this, although for the purposes of bathroom classification it is irrelevant. The second digit refers to a products ability to withstand water ingression. The closer to the bath, shower or sink a product is to be installed, the higher this number will need to be.
